Art & History Between Plains & Mountains
Venturing into the Sesia River valley by train means discovering diverse landscapes, from the Po Valley to the mountains, marveling at the beauty of nature and human creations. It is also a journey through art with the Sacro Monte di Varallo (the "New Jerusalem"), the oldest in Piedmont, built in various stages between 1486 and 1713. All of this is the Valsesia Railway, approximately 51 km long, connecting the Vignale station to that of Varallo Sesia. Its construction began in 1881, and the first section, about 26 km between Vignale and Romagnano Sesia, was inaugurated on February 22, 1883. In the following years, the other sections were built, with the inauguration of the entire line up to Varallo Sesia taking place on April 12, 1886. From Vignale, the line was connected to the Novara station via a section, just over 3 km long, already active since 1855 as part of the Arona-Alessandria line (and the Novara-Domodossola line). The railway ensured trade between the plains and the productive areas of Valsesia for about a century. Since September 15, 2014, passenger service has been suspended and replaced by buses; the Novara-Romagnano Sesia section is still used for freight service to the Kimberly paper mill, while the Romagnano Sesia-Varallo Sesia section is used exclusively for the occasional circulation of tourist trains.
