Irpinia Railway An Engineering Epic in the Apennine Heart
A daring engineering feat that represents the main internal line of Campania, built for crossing the Apennines. The design of the Irpinia Railway was carried out by the Mediterranean Railway Company in three stages: the first section inaugurated was between Rocchetta and Monteverde in 1892, followed by the section from Avellino to Paternopoli in 1893, and the completion of the central section in 1895. Launched with a daily service of 3 trains, the line has always remained confined to local transport with a modest number of passengers, both due to the long travel times and the lack of connections with towns far from the stations. In addition to this, the damage caused by Allied bombings during World War II and the earthquake that struck Irpinia in 1980 should be remembered. After the last maintenance work in 2003, the service was suspended with the entry into force of the winter timetable on December 12, 2010. The first tourist train traveled the line from Avellino to Calitri in November 1995 on the occasion of its centenary, and other events have followed since then. After the closure of regular service, tourist trains were activated from Foggia, via Rocchetta, to Conza in 2016, to Lioni in 2017, culminating in the reopening of the entire route in May 2018.
