Benevento-Bosco Redole Tourist Return to the Sannio Region
Nestled in the southern Apennines, the Benevento-Bosco Redole Railway is part of the longer Benevento-Campobasso route, built to connect the inland territories of Campania and Molise. Discussions about this line began around 1870, and in September 1881, the first section between Benevento and Pietrelcina was inaugurated. Two years later, the entire route was completed and service began. Passenger traffic on this line has always been limited due to a winding and therefore slow route, and the distance of the stations from populated centers. Service improved with the replacement of steam locomotives with diesel ones and the introduction of direct connections with Naples and Termoli, although the Naples-Benevento-Campobasso-Termoli cross-country route never functioned, and the line remained of exclusively local importance. The railway continued to survive until February 2013, when it was closed to traffic due to landslides near Santa Croce del Sannio. The section from Bosco Redole to Campobasso continues to be used by trains connecting Isernia to Campobasso. Since 2013, the Fondazione FS (Italian State Railways Foundation) has established the first direct connections between Naples and Pietrelcina (see box), initiating the reuse of the line for tourist purposes.
