Pedemontana Railway Between Prealps & Friulian Plain, a Historic Route
The Pedemontana Railway stretches for 74 km from Sacile to Gemona through wide and evocative landscapes: on one side, the circle of the Friulian Prealps with the entrances to the Cellina, Colvera, Meduna, and Arzino valleys, and on the other, the open and luminous plain, with intensely cultivated fields alternating with dense woods, lined by the white gravelly riverbeds of the streams flowing down to the sea. What today appears as a unified line was actually conceived and built in two distinct periods, mainly for military interests: the section from Pinzano to Gemona was activated on October 30, 1914, as part of the Casarsa-Pinzano-Gemona line, while the remaining section from Sacile to Pinzano entered service on October 28, 1930. This section, from which the name Pedemontana (foothill) derives, was initially conceived and managed as a branch of the Casarsa-Gemona line; after the closure of the Casarsa-Pinzano section in 1967, the service on the two remaining sections was unified, giving rise to the current line. The Pedemontana Railway has always had local importance, with modest traffic. After its suspension in 2012 following a landslide near Meduno, ordinary service was restored between Sacile and Maniago in 2017, while it remains suspended on the remaining section.
