A Journey Back to the Heart of Monferrato

The route of the Asti-Chivasso line, approximately 51 km long, develops in the heart of Monferrato. The line was built by the Swiss company Sutter, which also constructed the Arezzo-Sinalunga line, and was inaugurated in 1912. The Swiss origin of the designer influenced the particular architectural style of the station buildings that still characterize this railway infrastructure today. The line, which aimed to connect Monferrato to the Turin-Milan line and with the port of Genoa, crossed the Cavour Canal and the Po River, and included a long tunnel, the Brozolo Tunnel (2,346 m). In 1994, it suffered significant damage due to the flooding of the Po River, which also caused the collapse of the viaduct between Chivasso and San Sebastiano Po. The line reopened only in 2000, only to be definitively suspended in 2011 as part of the cuts to local public rail transport implemented by the Piedmont Region. Since 2021, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Italian Railway Network), on the indication of the Fondazione FS (Italian State Railways Foundation), has started the recovery works of the entire section, which officially reopened on October 2, 2022.
