Railway of the Murge A Journey Through the Colors of Puglia
Among the warm colors of the Murge land stretch the 139.2 km connecting Rocchetta Sant’Antonio to Gioia del Colle. The single-track, non-electrified line was activated between 1891 and 1892 with the inauguration of the first section between Rocchetta Sant’Antonio and Rapolla on August 1, 1891, and that between Rapolla and Gioia del Colle the following year. In 1938, a short 2 km branch line was inaugurated, connecting the main line to the center of Spinazzola. The "shuttle" service on this branch was not successful, so much so that the line was dismantled as early as 1987: today, the railway bed has been replaced by a cycle path. Due to the long distances between stations and the few urban centers along the line, passenger traffic was never particularly lively. In 2005, service was interrupted between San Nicola di Melfi, Spinazzola, and Gravina, then, in 2016, the termination of the service contract by the Puglia Region also led to the suspension between Gravina, Altamura, Santeramo, and Gioia del Colle. In June 2022, the Gioia del Colle-Rocchetta Sant’Antonio line became part of the "Timeless Tracks" project of the Fondazione FS Italiane (Italian State Railways Foundation) to return an important testimony of the history of the Murge to the community.
