The Turin–Canelli historic train is a journey into the heart of the most authentic Piedmontese landscape: a route that crosses UNESCO World Heritage hills, stretches of orderly vineyards, and villages frozen in time. The “Centoporte” carriages, an icon of 20th-century Italian railways, recreate the atmosphere of vintage travel with essential interiors, wide windows, and the rustic charm of wood.
From Turin, the train glides toward the Langhe and Monferrato regions, passing through landscapes that change colors with the seasons: golden rows in autumn, green hills in spring, and soft light accompanying every curve of the historic line. The itinerary leads to Canelli, a city famous for its Underground Cathedrals—grandiose historic wine cellars carved into the tuff rock—and a winemaking tradition rooted in the centuries.
Once on the ground, the area offers winemakers, local boutiques, and open tastings, perfect for experiencing Monferrato at your own pace. It is an invitation to slow down, breathe, and discover places where time still moves at a gentle rhythm.

The “Centoporte” (Hundred Doors) are among the most iconic carriages in the Italian historic fleet. Introduced in the 1930s, they owe their name to the numerous side doors that facilitated passenger boarding on the regional trains of the era. Built in steel with essential and robust interiors, they represent one of the longest-lasting symbols of 20th-century rail transport.
For decades, they connected cities and small towns throughout Italy, becoming a familiar element of the railway landscape. Today, thanks to the Fondazione FS, several units have been restored to their original charm, featuring wooden seats, sliding windows, and an atmosphere that brings back the authenticity of vintage travel. On board these carriages, every journey becomes an experience of history and landscape, ideal for appreciating the slow pace of the regions they cross.
Steam Traction
Steam locomotives represent the most fascinating heart of Italian railway history. Protagonists of 20th-century connections, they are imposing and ingenious machines, moved by a perfect balance of fire, water, and mechanics. Their characteristic white puff, the rhythmic sound of the pistons, and the unmistakable aroma of coal immediately transport you back to the atmosphere of vintage trains, when every journey was an event to experience and observe.
These locomotives, now preserved by Fondazione FS, are used on special occasions to evoke the magic of the past and rediscover the railway in its most authentic form.
