A slow journey through vineyards, villages, and underground cathedrals
The historic Turin–Canelli train is a journey into the heart of the most authentic Piedmontese landscape, framed within the concept of Itinerari d’Autore: an invitation to experience the territory through a personal and interpretative lens, guided by emotions, impressions, and details. The route crosses UNESCO World Heritage hills, expanses of neatly arranged vineyards, and villages suspended in time. The Centoporte carriages, symbols of 20th-century Italian railways, revive the atmosphere of vintage travel with essential interiors, large windows, and the rustic charm of wood finishes.
Departing from Turin, the train glides toward the Langhe and Monferrato, passing through landscapes that shift in color with the seasons: golden vineyards in autumn, lush green hills in spring, and soft light accompanying every curve of the historic line. The journey leads to Canelli, renowned for its Underground Cathedrals, impressive historic cellars carved into tuff rock, and a winemaking tradition rooted in centuries of history.
In the spirit of Itinerari d’Autore, the experience continues freely on the ground: among winemakers, artisan shops, and local tastings, each traveler is invited to shape their own path through Monferrato, following their own rhythm. An invitation to slow down, breathe, and discover places where time still flows with a gentle pace.

Steam locomotives represent the most fascinating heart of Italian railway history and, for the very first departure of this train, we have chosen the symbolic date of November 1st. Protagonists of twentieth-century travel, these imposing and ingenious machines are powered by a perfect balance of fire, water, and mechanics.
Their characteristic white puff of smoke, the rhythmic sound of the pistons, and the unmistakable aroma of coal will transform this inaugural journey into a plunge into the atmosphere of vintage trains, celebrating an era when every departure was a memorable event.
These locomotives, preserved today by the Fondazione FS, return to the tracks for this special occasion to evoke the magic of the past and rediscover the railway in its most authentic form. On the Turin–Canelli route, steam traction adds a unique element to the line’s debut: a slow, scenic journey full of charm, perfect for inaugurating a new season of discovery for Monferrato and its autumn landscapes.
The “Centoporte” (Hundred Doors) are among the most iconic carriages in the Italian historic fleet. Introduced in the 1930s, they owe their name to the numerous side doors that facilitated passenger boarding on the regional trains of the era. Built in steel with essential and robust interiors, they represent one of the longest-lasting symbols of 20th-century rail transport.
For decades, they connected cities and small towns throughout Italy, becoming a familiar element of the railway landscape. Today, thanks to the Fondazione FS, several units have been restored to their original charm, featuring wooden seats, sliding windows, and an atmosphere that brings back the authenticity of vintage travel. On board these carriages, every journey becomes an experience of history and landscape, ideal for appreciating the slow pace of the regions they cross.
Throughout the journey, both outbound and return, the onboard experience is an integral part of the itinerary. The train becomes a space for storytelling and discovery through:
The ever-changing scenery, combined with storytelling and tastings, turns the journey into an immersive experience, engaging the senses and enhancing the identity of the places encountered.
Seated aboard the historic Centoporte carriages, time slows down, giving way to an authentic travel experience.
The narrative of the territory, the observation of the landscape, and the tasting of local food and wine excellences accompany passengers along the route, transforming the journey into an opportunity for discovery and immersion in the local context.
A different way of experiencing the train, no longer just a means of transport, but a place of connection between history, culture, and territory.
